A flag comes back to the fold
The Canadian Red Ensign has come back from the wilderness. The flag that flew for Canada during two world wars but that was supplanted in 1965 by the Maple Leaf has now gained official recognition as one of Canada's national symbols, having been entered in the Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada.
As a long-time member of the
Red Ensign Brigade this is a proud moment - one that says the right thing about a symbol that so many Canadian soldiers fought and died under.
While not diminishing our current Maple Leaf we can pay respect to our past. That is indicative of what many of us believe that Canada can stand for - standing firmly facing the future, while paying respect to the cost that we have and will continue to pay for our freedom.
