Bluffing?

PM threatens election over same sex marriage

"It's not my intention to go into an election. We want to govern," said Martin who ended up with a minority in Parliament after last June's federal election.

"Am I ready to go into an election to uphold the charter of rights against those who would attack it? The answer is certainly yes."

Somebody obviously thinks that they have enough cash in the coffers for another election.

I hope this bluff is called. Outside of a direct referendum on the issue, this would be the most democratic way of deciding the debate: a one-issue election, winner take all...

Raise, call, or fold?

Oh and by the way, who the hell is editing CTV's news copy? Stephen Hamper instead of Harper, and is it Globe and Mail reporter Brian Laugh or Laghi? Talk about rushing your work.

  1. In my opinion the abolishment of same sex marriage is a peripheral issue. There are better things for the CPC to engage the Liberals on, and anyways, same sex marriage is here to stay. May as well live with it (pun intended!). Martin may posture about this issue as one he'd "go to the people" on, but the reality is that other issues would influence the campaign also--and the Conservatives would lose again.

  2. Of course it's a peripheral issue: compared to sponsorship, gun registry and the now forgotten HR waste program of several years ago it's nothing...

However, the Libs will push it, wrapping themselves in the Maple Leaf and posing as defenders of the precious Charter, and if the last election proved anything it's that the Conservatives have no clue how to seize and control an agenda. They will not - cannot - allow the Libs to maintain the initiative, otherwise the next election is probably a foregone conclusion and the Libs will look for ANY provocation to go to the polls.

    Any provocation.

I just wanted the next election to actually BE about something...
