The Canadian is a baffled man because he feels different from his British kindred and his American neighbours, sharply refuses to be lumped with either of them, yet cannot make plain the difference.
-- J.B. Priestly
This is my own personal belief as to why many seek to "be different" than Americans, or at least to be perceived as different. It leads us to strange places like:
- not ejecting Iraqi diplomats to keep "communication lines open", yet having an idiot backbencher advocate ejecting the American ambassador for telling us the truth about how our actions have hurt us in the States. Scarborough-Agincourt MP Jim Karygiannis is the latest moron to open his mouth: but he's not alone...
- Carolyn Parrish, the central Mississauga MP who touched off a firestorm by saying "Damn Americans, I hate those bastards", can't stop her WHINING. Yes, Carolyn it's all a "MEDIA CONSPIRACY" to discredit you and your destroy your incredible career as Minister of Foot-in-Mouth...I'm soooooooo happy I don't live in your riding...
The desire to distinguish ourselves as "not American" or "not British" used to force us from one to the other, siding as often as not with one against the other throughout Canada's history. Now the Liberal government has turned its back on both America and Britain simultaneously: an astounding trick!
If there was any benefit to doing this now I'd like someone to explain it. Please? How does this help us, especially since the U.S. takes in 84% of ALL Canadian exports..
Raging Kraut
Considering how the current US administration treated us before these incidents (soft-wood lumber, wheat, etc) the idiot comments can't hurt either. I have heard the US adminstration offer any British or Australian firms any contracts to help re-build Iraq once the war is over. Only US firms need apply for that gravy train.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for taking the time to comment here. I agree with some of what you say, however I think you are wrong about "the idiot comments can't hurt either."
My job, along with many other people in this country is dependent on U.S. tourists actually WANTING to cross the border and spend time and money here. For many others, 2 hour delays at the border crossings can endanger shipments to U.S. customers (that's what it is here in Ontario- I assume you're from B.C. what's the delay there?) It's too easy for Americans to avoid the hassle.
Many forget that for every grievance we've had with the U.S. there are hundreds of agreements that are in place and work. If you ignore the volume of noise coming from the disputes (justified as they may be: the softwood dispute especially) most businesses would classify our trade relationship as the greatest in the world.
Why endanger this with stupid rhetoric from assinine MP's? And don't for a minute suggest that this is some kind of POLICY from the Liberals...The Liberals manage by poll of course and now that the polls are turning in favour of the war they are back-pedalling furiously but can't retract their anti-war position without looking like the morons THEY are.
When personal attacks and insults by a sitting government are heard in the U.S. it hurts us more because the Americans can choose NOT to cross the border, NOT to buy our goods; in short NOT to support US. Why do business with a country that doesn't like you? Canada has lots of competition in the world...
Our government should think about:
what insults gain us - nothing
what insults lose us - lots
Canada has to think about its own interests it's true: that's why pissing off our best customer is a stupid thing to do.
