Everytime Rue and I watch a movie with two possible interpretations (whacked-out weirdo is crazy and all fantastical things happen in the weirdo's mind OR sci-fi weirdness is actually happening and only the hero can see it and act to save the world) long interesting conversations spring forth about the movie and what it all means. Movies like 12 Monkeys, or more recently Donnie Darko nd Mulholland Drive.
So you can imagine my disappointment when the director of Donnie Darko puts out a directors cut that takes the mystery out of everything and explains the whole damn thing. (DON'T CLICK IF YOU DON'T WANT MAJOR SPOILAGE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.)
The whole director's cut, fleece extra fan-dollars trend must be stopped.
And this isn't because my interpretation of Donnie Darko was wrong. It wasn't. But it just takes all the fun out of arguing with my wife and the mystery out of a damn fine movie.

I agree, it takes away from the fun of the movies, and takes away from mocking idiot movie reviewers who can't understand a plot (12 Monkeys was too complex?). Unrated versions of DVDs are fine, a little extra nudity never hurt anyone, and showing alternate endings is fine especially if the theater version had a Hollywood ending because some test audieance thought the original ending was a downer. But these should come on the original DVD release, and not some stupid Directors' cut, unless they give the purchasers plenty of warning that the Director's Release will be coming out later (a la Lord of the Rings).

12 Monkeys can be interpreted in 2 distinctly different ways (time travel or schizophrenic episode). If Terry Gilliam came out and said that there was one proper interpretation, which is what's happening to Darko, it would diminish the film as a whole.
I think I object to the director picking at something which was quite definitely finished the first time around and spelling out something that need not be spelled out.
