I'm trying my best to resist. Must. Be. Light. And. Funny...
I worry that I'm tapped out of subject matter. That the effin' war will take up the majority of the electrical impulses left between the dozen or so brain cells that are still firing in the hollowed-out cavity in the top of my skull.
I'm getting pissed off at the war coverage:
It's Private Lynch - not "Jessica" or "Jessie" or "'lil Jessie." She's not a lost little puppy who's been found: she's a soldier that has done her duty well - not well 'for a girl.' Am I the only damned feminist? Oh and she wants to be a kindergarten teacher. Very nice, but what does that have to do with anything?
Buzzphrases - how many times have the words "shock and awe" been rammed down our throats? Hell, they've even got me titling one of my entries "shock and awe"
The war coverage is so inept that they're resorting to covering the antics of their own reporters
Are we winning, are we losing? I dunno, and the TV can't tell me. I'm pretty well damn impressed considering that in less than a month the U.S. is getting close to Baghdad...But if I listened to some of the news commentary the U.S. should just give up and hand Saddam the keys to their cities. Oh, wait. Detroit's already done that...Well there's a lot about the 80's we'd like to forget.
I feel like the Grinch at Christmas (before the end of the story when they pussified him): "All the noise, the noise, the noise!"
Ahhhh, Christmas: only 265 more days to go!
Raging Kraut
From the injuries she's endured and survived I gather she's quite a 'bad-ass' regardless of gender.
I hate the media, grrrrrr.

I feel the same way about Private Lynch. This is just more U.S. propaganda. As if finding one of their soldiers will win sympathy from the world. If they are so 'good' to their troops they should pull them out of Iraq.

Whoah there Jen...
That's not what I meant. Lynch has earned the right to be regarded as a kick-ass soldier, not some cutesy-pooh little kewpie doll, which is the patronizing tone that some of the media has taken with regard to this story. The fact that the media keeps calling her "Jessica" rather than Private Lynch degrades the rank which she has EARNED.
Yes it is a "feel-good" story for the U.S. troops, and will probably be played up for the "folks back home." However I don't discount her acheivements- from all accounts she attempted to fight to the death...
As for whether the U.S. should be in Iraq, that's rather a moot point now and you're entitled to your views about it, even if I happen to disagree. You see I want FACTS, not entertainment. I want TRUTH, not character studies. I want SUBSTANCE, not opinionated garbage passing itself off as "info-tainment."
I'm pissed at the U.S. MEDIA, not the U.S. Forces in the Gulf.
I guess my views are not thoroughly founded on fact. I was just speaking from the gut. I just think that war in general is horrifying and I my hope was that the superpowers could be more pacific. One could argue that war is necessary, that Saddam would not understand anything other than force or that the world is over-populated anyways. I really feel sorrow for the suffering civilians of Iraq. If Bush had not weaseled his way into the presidency, would this war be going on right now?
Maybe I just have the soul of a hippy.

I agree.
War in general is horrifying: if it wasn't we'd have a lot MORE wars than we already do. As for whether President GORE would've done anything different after 9-11...I don't know. There are many who would've accused Gore of weaselling if he would've wound up President. The race WAS that close if you remember...
I think we in Canada didn't feel 9-11 the way the Americans did - we were sad, sorry, sympathetic etc. but it's like witnessing a friend's tragedy rather than feeling it yourself. I'm afraid that even though Toronto is only 1 hour away from New York by plane, people in L.A. felt the impact of that day in a way we as foreigners will NEVER know - unless it happens to us...
"I really feel sorrow for the suffering civilians of Iraq"
Really? Funny how the same pacifists make no mention of the atrocities the Iraqi people have been enduring for decades at the hand of their own dictator... oops! did I just inform you of something you did not already know? Good. That'll learn people not to just parrot whatever drivel they pick up in a conversation over caffe lattes with their 'trendy' friends and acquaintances.
I'm sick of anti-American sentiments masked by Canadian (or American for that matter) 'pacifism'. I still haven't heard anyone come up with a so-called 'peaceful solution'. However it's pointless now, for as we speak, the coalition forces have surrounded Baghdad. 'Someone' is doing 'something', for that I am grateful.
Perhaps because I am an American living in Canada I feel things more personally, and by the same token am more likely to feel torn. I did have blood-relatives working rescue duty on and after Sept. 11, 2001. I also had no illusions, it could have been happening to us just as easily.
But that was not the topic of this post. The intention of this post was to point out that Private Lynch is one tough 19 year old soldier, regardless of her gender. SO as much as I am not a blood-thirsty war monger, I am still in awe of the people who followed orders and went to this foreign and frightful land to fight.

I'm sorry, my comment was so long I lost my train of thought. As I was saying, the intention of this post was not only to point out that Private Lynch is one tough 19 year old soldier, regardless of her gender... but that the actual war coverage by the media leaves much to be desired. I would just for once like to know what's really going on, or at the very least be told the TRUTH, no matter how little of that is known. Spare me all the meaningless filler.

The one point that all of you have forgotten is that because Pvt Lynch happens to be attractive, and becuase the US Media has made such a big deal about her rescue. Pvt Lynch is going to make a huge whack o' dough selling her story to Hollywood. Just think a year from now "Saving Private Lynch" will win Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen their first of many Oscars in the heroic story of how Pvt Lynch took on Saddam Hussein mano-a-mano, and only was injured when he used chemical warfare to temporarily disable her. Luckily the US Special Forces team led by Leo DiCaprio, who also was her high-school sweetheart, rescue her just as Osama Bin Laden is about to take her virginity.

Only two things scare me, and one of them is "Mary-Kate and Ashley"
