I promised myself that I wasn't going to start on the budget that the Canadian Federal Government brought down this week.
I counted to fifty.
I rearranged papers on my desk into neat little piles then "accidentally" knocked them over onto the ground.
But I can't hold still anymore.
The Liberals have again reached into our pockets to take more than they should in the name of "fiscal responsibility" - and like good clapping seals the general population has seen fit to reward them with a surge in the polls.
Rather than get into the details of why I'm so pissed off I'll give you an example:
Your deadbeat drunk of a brother comes to you saying he needs $150 to pay his bookie who's going to rip his arms off if he doesn't pay him. Out of concern and familial responsibility you give him the $150, only to find out later that the bookie was only owed $100 and your deadbeat brother took the extra $50 and split it by paying $25 to HIS Visa bill and drinking the other $25 in beer that he bought because it was "extra" money.
The Feds have been doing the same thing to us ever since 1993.
If they were actually attempting to spend wisely and take only what was necessary from us they would have run at least one deficit in the last twelve years. No one is that accurate, so the conclusion is that they're padding their numbers by BILLIONS.
Raging Kraut
I don't think your example accurately reflects the situation. Any surplus at the end of the year goes to pay the debt.
From reading many of your arguments, your main thrust tends to be that the Liberals are overspending and there should be tax relief before doing any additional spending. Case in point, John McCallum was able to find $10.9 billion in internal savings, which they promptly spent on new programs, instead of large scale tax relief. No one seems upset that this program review which found the $10.9 billion hadn't been done before (how many billions were wasted?), and no one said boo about spending it, as long as it went to the military or daycare.
I can agree with some of the spending commitments. I agree that our Military needs to be modernized, and given the ability to do it's functions properly. I don't know that we have to "punch above our weight". I agree with extra funding to amateur athletes so that we can excel at the Olympics the way that Australia does. I think that $5 billion to daycare is crap the way they are thinking of doing it. If they want to help families they could easily increase CTB benefits for children under 6 without setting up a new bureaucracy.
The government still has a long way to go on thinking "why" they are funding a program, instead of "what" they are funding.

You're missing my point Greg.
I have some specific problems with specific programs this government is proposing: only natural, since I didn't vote for them. That's not what has me pissed though.
Consistently underestimating revenue so they can use excess surplus to "save" them when they screw up on bloated programs such as the gun registry, hr program initiatives and the sponsorship program in Quebec, and then bragging about "fiscally responsible government" is an insult to all Canadians. And has been a drain on potential Canadian productivity.
If an NDP government was in power or a Conservative government, and they were at least honest about collecting what they needed, and no more, but ran a deficit sometimes, I'd be happier with them than with this pack of thieves and liars.
