Much Ado about Nothing

"The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation."
-- Pierre Elliott Trudeau

And in my opinion, neither does the Catholic Church.

This whole thing is one stupid collossal waste of time...

If you are Catholic, but choose to be gay, you are rejecting Catholicism, because Rome makes the rules. You won't convince them that your homosexuality is a good thing and something to be celebrated. Trying to get them to OK your union is silly, kind of like getting homophobic parents to accept your "lover" as family. You will have to decide the "morality" of your own behaviour because love and acceptance from Rome ain't gonna happen.

The church is trying to flex its muscles over democratically-elected (OK I'm stretching that here in the Liberal-party-fiefdom of Canada) politicians by threatening them with hell-fire and damnation. This is EXACTLY why seperation of church and state is a GOOD thing: so that I don't have to deal with stupid intrusions into my life by fairy-tale religious ceremonies that have nothing to do with me.

And to all the nutbars out there that think discipline started to crumble in public schools when they took out the Lords Prayer: you're so wrong. Discipline crumbled when it was hammered home that teachers were powerless to enforce any kind of discipline (physical or emotional) on students because the indulgent whiny parents would show up screaming "not MY Johnny!!" when confronted with what idiots their kids were being. Johnny got it in his mind that teachers were useless and decided to treat them as such. The Lord's Prayer had nothing to do with anything.

But I ramble and digress (but hey, it's my blog! Ahahahahaha!)

Currently the situation is such a mess, much akin to what's coming down the pipe with the Marijuana laws in Canada.

  1. Re: Your point 1) Worrying about the politicians who may vote along religious lines instead of what the majority of their constituents want, I'm more worried about those who actually vote for what the majority of their constituents want, rather than what is right. When dealing with a minority issue, it is almost always in the interest of the majority to keep the minority repressed so that they remain the minority. In the case of Gay marriages, who gives a rat's ass what the majority thinks, the constitution says that everyone is equal under the eyes of the law therefore Gays should have the right to marry just like everyone else. Of course at the same time the politicians need to amend the Divorce Act to allow them to divorce just like everyone else.

  2. Ah but you see they're not voting their conscience. Chretien and Martin are supposed Catholics - yet they support this move towards gay marriage. The fact that the Catholic Church is now threatening their very souls if they don't comply with "god's will" is external pressuring of a sovereign nation.

To a true believer this pressure has to have an effect, which is what the Church is intending. Why risk hell?

  3. What a person has to do to become an elected federal politician condemns them to hell anyways, so in theory it should have no effect on them. Both Chretien & Martin know that they're condemned so they are doing the right thing. GWB is trying to save his soul (not being smart enough to know that he's already condemned to hell) thus is doing the wrong thing. (Ironic isn't it?)

  4. Ah, now your just being dismissive. I'm sure there are politicians at various levels of the "means to and end" continuum of evil, yet still believe that they are untouched and have a conscience to vote.

I don't think the thought of hell enters into it.

I think you misunderstand me: I'm not upset about the effectiveness or result of the tactic. I'm upset that they're even trying this in the twenty-first century and no one aside from the usual suspects (Svend Robinson) is attempting to put them in their (much lower) place...
