I'm not talking about McDonald's or Wendy's here - I'm talking about a nice, sit-down restaurant that has a take out menu.
I phoned.
I placed the order.
I went to go get the order when it was ready.
I got handed the credit card slip when I paid for my meal and the "tip" and "total" boxes were unfilled. The subtotal above "tip" was the cost of the meal and taxes. I filled out "-" for the tip and just carried the subtotal down to the total box and then signed my name.
And waited to see the reaction: a momentary glance and eyes full of judgement. If I didn't already have my food in boxes, I'm sure the hostess would've spit in it.
Why do I have to tip for takeout. Eating in is different, I'm being served, and the wait staff can determine how enjoyable my meal is going to be. The delivery guy also deserves a couple of bucks if he's bringing food to my door. What did the restaurant do for me that I have to tip when I pick up food?
Am I totally out of line here? Comments people, comments!

Just be glad you're moving and you won't be ordering takeout from that restaurant ever again...
But I agree, no service, no tip. I don't tip the Canadian Tire cashier for ringing through my windex.
The only exception is at full serve gas stations, where I know some peope still do tip the attendant, but again, that's a service provided.

I haven't come across that yet but I certainly wouldn't tip. Like Chris said, we don't tip the cashier that rings in our stuff for us; why would we tip the restaurant?
This kind of stuff just pisses me right off too. It's the expectation of money for nothing. If all you did was ring up a transaction, what makes you feel entitled to anything extra?
Mind you, I detest the whole tipping thing anyway. It's no longer a way to reward above-average service, but a bribe necessary to ensure you don't get crappy service if you go back. More like blackmail to me.

I have, on occasion, tipped for takeout, out of confusion. It's nice to know that others have faced this dillemma too.
I don't think I'll be tipping anymore.
