So much for the Peace Train

Cat Stevens was guest of Canadian Hamas front.

TORONTO - Yusuf Islam, the British singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, was the guest of honour at a Toronto fundraising dinner hosted by an organization that has since been identified by the Canadian government as a "front" for the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.

In a videotape of the 1998 event obtained by the National Post, Mr. Islam describes Israel as a "so-called new society" created by a "so-called religion" and urges the audience to donate to the Jerusalem Fund for Human Services to "lessen the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Palestine and the Holy Land."

You have to wonder if this was the reason the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens was denied entry to the U.S.

Or did authorities have more?

  1. That is true but that is also when Canada, and much of the rest of the world, accepted the two separate activities of Hamas, the second one he was supporting was the schools and clinics bunch. If that speech in 1998 - unpleaseant but non-violent as it is- had any effect on the refusal to let him into the State at the end of the summer of 2004, you would think that it should have had an effect on his entry into the States at the beginning of the summer of 2004 and that he would have been on a list on UK no-travel persons shared with the USA. Neither is the case.

  2. Interesting point. Could the Post have obtained the video first? Or that it recently came to light and that's why the U.S. suddenly denied him entry now?

  3. Cat Stevens has been a leader in the moderate fundamentalist (ie strict but not esposing violence) Islamic movement. Every speech he would give would be taped and publicly advertised. He spoke at Dalhousie in Halifax in around 1989 and did pretty much the same presentations as it is sounding much as he is doing now. If homeland security only twigged to this between the early summer of 2004 and late summer of 2004 that speaks volumes to the state of homeland security.

  4. Thanks Alan.

Your opinion - An over-reaction on the authorities' part?

  5. Exactly - and I would add one that was apparently handled with a certain grace by the particular people involved on both sides. Someone from high said no and from what I read everyone on the ground was a little embarrassed.
