And you thought Toronto stunk during the garbage strike of '02. I was next door in Mississauga and whew! did it ever make me want to retch...
I smell the stench of protectionism in the air. Oh, I'm sorry. Did my fellow Canadians think that they'd be part of the giant lefty group hug? That their so-called "support" would result in some kind of consideration from Mr. Flip-Flop?
Toronto started sending all of its trash to Michigan in January 2003. Michigan now gets around 180 truckloads of trash each day from Canada, and Stabenow said one-quarter of Michigan's landfill space is now being taken up by trash from Canada and other states.
So Kerry is supposed to be a "friendlier" president for Canadians to deal with?
And you thought the beef and softwood lumber disputes were bad...
The IT is that many Canadians have a visceral dislike of Bush and are rushing whole-heartedly into Kerry's arms, not realizing that his protectionist zeal (ie. the belief that free trade is HARMING America because of exported jobs and cheap imported products) is going to have a real cost to Canadians if he's elected - in jobs, in reduced exports and trade barriers etc. etc.
It's going to hit my former hometown of Toronto extra hard because one of the city's biggest exports across the border is stinking garbage. The losers in Toronto city council would have to actually make a decision about what to do with the waste the city produces, rather than shipping it off to Michigan for the Americans to worry about...
Nader? Well I guess you're the rep of the 3% that are throwing their votes away.
